LERNING IS GOOD
Born and raised in Memphis, TN, Matthew Melton grew up playing in garage bands and hanging around with some now legendary underground punk icons like Jay Reatard, Alicja Trout, and a slew of others. He cut his musical teeth in the Memphis Break-Ups, Bare Wires and River City Tanlines while also grabbing some stranger notoriety for his artwork (and especially for his now iconic "Blood Visions" cover photograph for Jay Reatard).
After years working on various projects, he made the decision to break away, abruptly leaving everything he owned and everyone he knew behind him, to take a chance on the "illusive California dream".
Melton's nomadic romping through uncharted waters and the necessary self-exploration that accompanies such gambols led to his formation of Snake Flower (one) virtually overnight. With only broken fragments of equipment to lean on, they embarked on their first (ill-prepared) tour, with the band at this time mostly a psych-improv group. Early on Melton fell in love with then band member "Bunny", only to have his heart broken upon return to California. "She left me for a pretentious art school professor that looks like a haggard John Lennon", recalls the burnt Melton. He phoenixed his way into Snake Flower 2 out of a heated and spontaneous mix of determination and love-sickness.
What ensued from that point forward was a crude but honest (and almost other-worldly) authenticity, a project documenting the situations of his life, and innocently conveying the world-weary stature gained throughout the course of a firey succession of trials and errors. It all comes together: the stories of the blues, the flair of great rock n roll, and the attitude of seminal first-wave punk rock. Planted full-circle as a new chapter in the musically storied California back-drop, Melton's recordings form a series of quirky pop-rock singles and the raw and honest rock wallop of the perfectly titled "Renegade Daydream" LP. Documented rightfully in a raw state, this sound avoids the fingerprint of any era.
